Question: Is there any difference in printing performance between the parallel and USB interfaces?
A: Yes, USB is the recommended interface for the highest speed. If your system is running Windows 98 First Edition or has been upgraded from Windows 95 it is suggested you use the parallel interface. When running Windows 98 Second Edition or Windows ME the parallel performance will be about equal or a little slower than USB. The design of Windows 2000 and Windows XP (which is based on Windows 2000) has a slower parallel printing performance. USB is the best choice of interfaces and will keep the printer running at full engine speed. If you are unsure of your configuration contact your system administrator or software provider.

Question: Is there a printer self test to determine if a problem is caused by the printer?
A: You can run a printer operation check to determine whether the problem comes from the printer itself or some other source. If the results are satisfactory, the problem lies in your software settings, the interface cable, or your computer. Follow these steps to run the printer check:
1. Make sure both the printer and computer are turned off.
2. Disconnect the interface cable from the printer.
3. Make sure paper is loaded in the printer.
4. Hold down the Load / Eject button, and turn on the printer.

The printer prints its ROM version number and a nozzle check pattern.
If your printer differs from the one shown consult your manual

If the pattern has stripes, you need to clean the print head.

5. To clean the print heads hold down the Load / Eject button for Three seconds. Cleaning takes approximately 30 seconds. When it is finishes reprint the check page. You may have to run the cleaning a few times before the prints are correct. A printer will sometimes need to be cleaned if it hasn't been used after an extended period of time. Refer to step 4 for reprinting the test page.

6. To end the check, turn off the printer after it prints the check page. Then reconnect the interface cable and turn on your printer and computer. If the check page prints, the problem probably lies in your software settings, the interface cable, or your computer. If the check page doesn't print, you should contact EZ/CD Print technical support.

Question: How long should an ink cartridge remain in the printer if it’s not used often.
A: When an installed ink cartridge is more than six (6) months old, you may need to replace it if you notice that your printouts don't look as good as they used to. First run a head cleaning and print head alignment from your printer software. If print quality doesn't improve after cleaning and aligning the print head, you should replace the ink cartridges.

Question: What does it mean if a light is flashing?
A: Depending on the model of your printer there will be two or three buttons at the top. Some units do not have an Ink Out light.

If one or more of the buttons are lit or flashing there could be a number of things going on with your printer.:

Light Color and behavior Explanation
Green Power light solid Printer is ready to print
Red Load / Eject light solid Printer out of paper, CD tray not inserted or paper jam
Red Ink Out light solid Ink cartridges need to be replaced
Green Power light flashes Printer is receiving data, cleaning print heads or charging new cartridges
Red Load / Eject light flashes Low ink Cartridge, replace soon
Green and Red lights flashing Internal error in the printer. Turn your printer off, wait one minute and restart

Combinations like a solid red and flashing green can occur. In these cases refer to this table and assume both situation are occurring simultaneously.
If you are still having problems with your printer fill out our Technical Support Request form and you will be contacted for service.

Question: I loaded the CD Tray correctly but when I went to print it ejected the tray without printing.
A: This issue is covered in your Getting Started Guide, a .pdf copy is available online through the link provided.

It is normal for the CD tray to eject itself the first time you tell the printer to print. Wait until the printer stops moving and the red Load / Eject light is solid. Then reload the CD tray. Make sure the tray is aligned properly and is flush against the ridge on the CD tray guide.

When inserting the tray a little bit of resistance is normal. Once the tray is aligned properly push the red Load / Eject button.

If an error message appears on your screen do not select anything. Choosing OK or Cancel can interrupt the normal printing process and cause the CD tray to be ejected again. If the printer sounds like the CD tray is catching on anything the CD tray may be warped. Standard and special application trays are available through our Online Store.

Question: When I print CDs the images have lines through them and look grainy.
A: This can be caused by your printer quality settings being set too low. When printing on CD it is best to use the high quality or photo printing options and turn off fast printing. A quick way to set your printer to the correct options for different media is to use the EZ/CD Print Utility. Just start the utility and select the desired media.

It will automatically adjust your printer settings for optimal printing.

If you choose to set your printer options yourself use the photo or best photo settings. Saturation should be set to medium or low depending on the brand of media you use. If the image smears or runs saturation settings are too high or the media may not be inkjet printable. If the image is too faint the settings may be too low.

Question: How do I upgrade my EZ/CD Print software?
A: The latest version of the EZ/CD Print Utility introduced a new software upgrade feature. As this is the latest version a new one is not available yet. When a newer version is released there will be a notice on our website.

The discus software can be upgraded though Magic Mouse, the developer of that software.

All current drivers for our products are available on our Downloads page. If you have a software problem, remove the current driver and install the latest one from our site.

EZ/CD Print support does not troubleshoot issues arising from drivers or when using Discus, Photoshop or any other graphic editing or printing software. Any issue with these products should be directed to their developers.

Question: When I print to CD the ink is smearing or running off the disk.
A: An image will smear if there is too much ink on the CD. The advanced software settings for your printer will allow you to change the saturation level to avoid this. You can also download our EZ/CD Print Utility which will automatically set the printer to the best settings for the media and quality you choose.

If adjusting the settings does not solve your problem run a head cleaning through the software or by holding down the Load / Eject button for three seconds. Alternativly the seals on your ink cartridges could be bad. Replacing the cartridges and rerunning the cleaning cycle should solve this issue. Cartridges are available in our Online Supply Store

If your settings are correct and the CD still smears or runs make sure you are using inkjet printable media. Some media has a slick finish that will absorb permanent marker but can not absorb ink from the printer. The correct media is available in our Online Media Store.

Some Silver and Diamond CD-R media will not work with standard inkjet printers. When ordering new media make sure sure to check customer feed back or contact the reseller and make sure the media will work in a standard inkjet printer.

Question: When I print on CD the image doesn’t cover the whole CD.
A: When you first install the Discus software, or later if you have to reinstall it, the software will require some adjustment to get the correct alignment. Run a CD through using the standard template for your printer. Once it prints check to see how far off in each direction it is and adjust using the arrow buttons under the Print tab in Discus. You may have to do this a few times to get the best alignment.

The two numbers indicate the amount of adjustment from the base template. Once you have the printer calibrated keep a record of these numbers and the name of your template so you can reenter them later. To get an even better alignment it may be necessary to use the sliders above the arrow button to change the size of the outer circumference and inner circumference of the disk.

For any other Discus related software issues please contact Magic Mouse the developer of that software. EZ/CD Print Support does not address issues arising from the discus software or any other graphics or printing software.

Question: How do I change my ink cartridges?
A: Some printers have three buttons on top, these include the original EZ/CD Printer, the EZ/CD Print 5700 and the EZ/CD Printer Plus. The button opposite the power button is the Ink Out button.

When the system is out of ink this button will be lit. Pressing it will bring the ink carriage to the center of the printer and allow you to change the cartridges. Unwrap the cartridges and follow the instruction for removing any tags.

Replace the cartridges carefully makeing sure not to improperly insert the cartridges or touch the chip on the ink cartridge.

Once installed press the Ink Out button again and the cartridges will be charged. Do not interrupt this process as the cartridges could be damaged and have to be replaced. When the green light is solid again the printer is ready to print.

Question: When I print on paper the printer ejects it without printing
A: Copy paper tends to be too thin for the paper sensor to pick up, this causes the printer to eject it. When using the printer for paper it is suggested that you use only inkjet weight paper. Inkjet paper is thicker than copy paper and better able to absorb ink for better quality prints. If your printer continually ejects inkjet paper wait until the print stops moving, load one peice of paper and press Load / Eject.

Question: I just changed my ink cartridges. Why are the cartridges moving to the middle like they want to be replaced again?
A: If you have two cartridges from different brands they will not be seen by the printer. It is best to replace both cartridges to reduce confusion.
